With two rivers plus some still water fishing opportunities, the area provides angling opportunities to suit all levels of experience. While both rivers run through largely agricultural land, there are many areas where this is not particularly evident on the river bank with otters, water voles and a rich variety of bird life often being sighted.
The salmon fishing season on both the Deveron and Ythan runs from 11 February to 31 October. Although the seasonal runs, particularly in the spring, are much reduced from those experienced in earlier times, opportunities for good angling in secluded rural surroundings can still be found in the Turriff and District area
The Deveron is the larger of the two rivers and superb brown trout fishing can be enjoyed, particularly during April and May, with many fish around 5 to 6 lb. being caught each season while lesser fish between 1 and 3 lb. are not uncommon.
From around the middle of May through to August sea trout move into the river, commonly these are about 3 lb. in weight but specimens of up to 7 lb. are not unusual.
The spring run yields up to 90 fish before the beginning of June. During July grilse start to run and this often continues to through to merge with the ‘back end’ salmon run. In this late run fish exceeding 30 lb. weight can be landed although the chances of beating the 61 lb. all time record for the Deveron, (and the British Isles) on a fly, sadly, is unlikely. The total annual salmon catch is normally about 2,000.
The Ythan is a relatively small river with proportionally smaller runs of fish although the seasonality is similar to that on the Deveron.
