Auchterless is a village in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, approximately 7 miles from Turriff. It is traditionally known as “Kirkton of Auchterless”.The history of Auchterless is extremely ancient, with prehistoric, Roman and Pictish remains including stone circles, and the remains of earthen huts.

Auchterless Church was built in 1879 and is a fine example of Gothic architecture. It replaced the earlier St Drostan’s Church whose ruins to the south west include a bellcote with a bell dated 1644.

Towie Barclay Castle which dates back to 16th century, which is to be found approximately 2 miles North of Auchterless, was built by the Barclay family. For many years it was left in disrepair but during the 1970s it was restored and is now privately owned.

Nearby to Towie Barclay is Hillhead of Seggat Farm, the birthplace of Lewis Grassic Gibbon.
